About Helsinki

Helsinki is the capital of Finland and it is situated in the south of the country, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. It is the major financial, political, educational and cultural centre of Finland. It has a population of about 591,000 people, but the Greater Helsinki region which includes the neighboring cities of Espoo and Vantaa has over 1.3 million inhabitants. The official languages are Finnish and Swedish.

The city was founded in 1550 by King Gustav Vasa of Sweden. In 1809 the country was annexed by Russia and in 1812 the capital of Finland was moved from Turku to Helsinki. The same period the architects Carl Ludwig Engel and Johan Albrecht Ehrenström were asked to rebuild the city in a neoclassical style and thus, the famous buildings gave the city the name of “The White City Of The North”. However, the city is also known for the Art Nouveau buildings designed in the early 1900s. The archipelago surrounding Helsinki is also worth being visited in the summer for the amazing sights. Suomenlinna is one of the greatest islands with a fortress which is included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO. Korkeasaari hosts the Helsinki Zoo with approximately 200 different animal species.

There are numerous museums, parks and churches that can offer tourists a wonderful time thanks to various events, concerts, good restaurants and popular activities. As such, Hotels in Helsinki are proud to have you as our guests and are wishing you to have a wonderful trip in Helsinki while we will be taking care of your accommodation.
